In July, the House voted unanimously to make September Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in Pennsylvania.  The resolution was introduced by Rep. Sean Ramaley (D-Beaver) in honor of his aunt Gwen Kordalski, who died in December 2005 after a three-and-a half-year battle with ovarian cancer.

“It is my hope this resolution shows our support to the women who are struggling with ovarian cancer, raises awareness and encourages women to be tested for the disease,” Ramaley said in his recent press release.

According to the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is the fifth-leading cause of cancer-related death among women, with an estimated 15,000 women expected to die from it this year.  Women have the best chance of survival if the cancer is caught early.

Ramaley is reminding constituents to head out to the 8th annual Karen F. Bowers Memorial Break the Silence on Ovarian Cancer Walk  in Pittsburgh on Sunday, Sept. 14.  For information about the walk, or to learn more about ovarian cancer, visit Ramaley’s web site or check out the National Ovarian Cancer Coaliton of Pennsylvania’s Pittsburgh site.
