The Pittsburgh Tribune Review:

“The 131 lung transplants performed at UPMC in 2010 was the most at any U.S. hospital, officials announced today.

The figure was also a record for the hospital system, which has performed more than 100 lung transplants in each of the last four years.

Dr. Joseph Pilewski, a transplant pulmonologist and medical director of UPMC’s Lung Transplantation Program, credited the hospital system’s “experienced, dedicated multidisciplinary team” for their success.

‘We are proud of the work we’ve done to build a strong program that provides an opportunity for increased survival and improved quality of life to patients with life-threatening respiratory diseases,’ Pilewski said in a prepared statement announcing the milestone.”
