From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:
“Adolescent girls who participate in high-impact physical activities such as gymnastics, cheerleading, basketball and running are at higher risk for developing stress fractures, according to a report that will be in the August print edition of the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine and was published online earlier this month.
“Weight-bearing activity stimulates bone remodeling and thus increased bone mass density, but very high levels of activity may be detrimental to bone health and increase the risk of stress fracture,” said Alison Field of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and the Harvard Medical School.”
