Yesterday, 3 unions representing state workers filed suit against Rendell for his threatened furloughs. The lawsuit questions whether Rendell can rightfully use the federal Fair Labor Act as the legal basis for authority to furlough about 25,000 state workers if a budget is not passed by the Constitutional deadline of July 1st, reports the Associated Press.
The three unions represent about 17,000 of the state workers that would be furloughed. The defendants are the state, Rendell, Rendell’s secretary of administration, his budget secretary, and the state treasurer.
Rendell’s spokesman, Chuck Ardo said the Administration hopes the Legislature and Gov. can come to a budget agreement in time to make this suit moot.
