Scientists are using increasingly sophisticated virtual patients to test procedures that can’t be easily tested in human subjects. Medical testing does not involve children or pregnant women due to ethical concerns; so the virtual patients use medical data and computer software and graphics to mimic real people, with skin, bones, fat and organs of realistic size, shape and composition. These virtual patients could lead to faster FDA acceptance of procedures and devicese.
