The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes,

“Nearly 30 percent of patients admitted to Pennsylvania hospitals or other health care settings acquired an infection and were readmitted within 30 days, compared with 6.2 percent of patients who did not acquire an infection but had to come back for other reasons.

“We don’t know the cause and effect here, but when you look at the cases, it certainly leaves one concerned about the impact the infections are having,” said Joe Martin, executive director of the independent state agency Pennsylvania Healthcare Cost Containment Council.”
