From The Philadelphia Daily News:
Gov. Rendell has agreed to a request from the state’s chief justice, Ron Castille, to freeze close to 30 vacant judgeships across Pennsylvania, because of the court system’s shaky finances.
The freeze will have no immediate impact on the Philadelphia courts, because the governor is moving ahead with three recent Common Pleas Court nominations, now awaiting confirmation in the state Senate.
But it’s leaving 28 courtrooms vacant in other parts of Pennsylvania and could lead to additional vacancies as more judges die or retire. Some of the judicial slots won’t be filled until 2012, after primary and general elections next year.
