Reports The Patriot-News:

Workers will need to pass credit checks before getting help from the two programs announced by the Pennsylvania State Employees Credit Union and Orrstown Bank.

Both institutions have unveiled low-cost loan programs for state workers, who could start going without paychecks in mid-July if the budget deadlock continues.

Rendell and legislative leaders have cited such safety nets as they haggle over a budget plan for the fiscal year starting Wednesday.

But people still must have good enough credit to qualify for the loans. In the case of PSECU’s offer, they must be members of the credit union and have direct deposit for part of their paychecks.

About 35,000 state workers have direct deposit through PSECU, according to the Harrisburg-based credit union.
