About 30 consumer groups gathered at the Capitol yesterday, calling “on the state Senate to debate and vote on a plan that would cover 273,000 uninsured state residents within five years, and cost $479 million in the first year. Pennsylvania has about 900,000 uninsured residents, according to figures complied by the Rendell administration several years ago,” according to the Patriot-News….

The plan is opposed by many Republicans, including some who call it ’socialism.’ Business groups have also opposed the plan, arguing it’s too expensive, and doesn’t do enough the reduce the overall cost of medical care, which they see as the main problem.”
