A new study published today in The Lancet shows information that shows that  computer algorithm that monitored glucose levels and recommended adjustments worked better at preventing hypoglycemia during the night than a standard diabetes management system.

This study could lead to new medical devices that allow patients and their caregivers to sleep easier. The standard system currently has a continuous glucose monitor that operates separately from a preprogrammed insulin pump. This study reveals the potential for an automated system that works together to monitor glucose and dispense insulin, what researchers are calling “an artificial pancreas.”
