Jonas Salk Legacy Fund is named after Dr. Jonas Salk who contributed to the polio vaccine. This fund proposed by Governor Ed Rendell seeks to leverage tobacco settlement dollars and other supplemental funds to research and the biosciences. Funds will be used to build research facilities in the Commonwealth and purchase equipment. There are several subsequent goals for the Commonwealth as a result of investing in expanded medical research through this fund and they include:
- Attracting top research faculty
- Boosting the number of well-paying and rewarding jobs
- Increasing business
- Making Pennsylvania more attractive to major pharmaceutical and bioscience companies
