The completed merger of the Shamokin Area Community Hospital and Geisinger Medical Center is celebrated as an optimal outcome for the hospital systems.

The Daily Item reports the now Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital will allow patients to continue receiving high quality medial care close to their home, during a time when small hospitals are suffering from a slow economy.

The merger was announced in 2010 and approved this past summer.  The transition was then completed over the New Year’s holiday.
