WGAL-TV today reported on guidelines recently released by a number of national healthcare organizations, including the American Hospital Association, that provide hospitals with ways to prevent hospital-acquired infections.

In recent years, about 90,000 patients per year die because of infections that they acquire during their hospital stays.

The guidelines include instructions on how hospitals can mandate active surveillance programs; information on high-tech equipment available for detecting infection; and other, simpler methods such as proper handwashing procedures.
