The Philadelphia Inquirer reports:
Deep into the recession, regional grant-makers are pruning operations, putting holds on programs and projects, and fleshing out scenarios that range from the doomsday to the merely chastened.
Meanwhile, many grantees, including health-care organizations and community arts groups, are hanging on by increasingly slender threads, and a number seem to be contemplating shutting down if a watering hole does not materialize over the next line of dunes.
In preliminary results of a survey of 175 area nonprofits, almost half said their financial condition was worse than a year ago, said Laura Otten, director of the Nonprofit Center at La Salle University, which conducted the survey. About two-fifths reported a loss of sponsorship money, and three-fifths reported a decline in individual contributions, she said.
