A laptop with information for over 21,000 patients was stolen from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in June. Thomas Jefferson University Hospital recently sent a newsletter out to all patients whose information was on the laptop, offering identity-theft monitoring and protection. The laptop did require a password for access. The hospital said it would do all it could to protect patients from misuse of information on the laptop, including their social security numbers.
Since 2009, a federal database has recorded 121 cases of exposed patient information of over 5 million people. Cases like these bring concern to many as talk of electronically storing medical records increases.
