Identified as one of the cities with the poorest air quality in the nation, Carlisle is getting a monitor from the Environmental Protection Agency that will keep citizens informed of the daily pollution readings in their area.

The monitor will be installed sometime this fall on top of the building that houses the city’s newspaper, The Sentinel.  The newspaper will provide an updated reading every hour from the monitor on its website, and publish the morning’s reading in its print edition.

The project is being led by the Clean Air Board of Central PA, which hopes that residents will consider the monitor’s readings when deciding when to spend time outdoors, especially to exercise.

They also hope that the readings will provide concrete evidence that they’ll be able to use to move forward legislation that would place anti-idling restrictions on diesel trucks– the main contributors of pollution in the area.
