Our gambling neighbor to the east has gone nonsmoking, reports the New York Times.

The Atlantic City Council yesterday voted unanimously to ban smoking on all casino floors, beginning October 15.

“The employees of Atlantic City’s casinos have hit a jackpot of their own tonight,” said Dr. Arnold M. Baskies, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society in New Jersey and New York.

“Hard-working casino employees have been keeping Atlantic City’s multibillion-dollar casino industry on a roll, but have been gambling with their lives for far too long,” Dr. Baskies said.

Patrons will still be able to smoke away from the floor, in specially-constructed smoking pavillions, if the casinos choose to build them.

Only time will tell if Pennsylvania’s smoking ban is enacted, and what it might mean for our casinos.
